NEWS SEPTEMBER 2025
Schleswig-Holstein State Award for Building Culture 2025 Award in the Civil Engineering and Infrastructure Category
The new construction of the Schlei pier is located on the banks of the Schlei in the listed historical center of Sieseby. In terms of materiality and appearance, the structure draws inspiration from the simplicity of the previous fisherman’s pier. The reason for the new construction was, on the one hand, the necessary renewal of the jetty, and on the other, a programmatic recoding of the pier as a central meeting place for the local population and the growing number of holiday guests.
The jury praises this work for its locally authentic and timeless integration of the wooden pier into the village context, achieved with the necessary naturalness and simplicity. The social value lies in fully unlocking the potential for diverse new offerings on the ‚little pier‘ as a meeting and lookout point for locals and visitors alike. In particular, the involvement of Siesby’s citizens in the planning process is rated by the jury as an exemplary model for fostering community identification with public structures. The technical and functional finesse lies in the reduced choice of materials, as well as the clever and straightforward implementation of requirements for people with reduced mobility.
These measures lead to an enhanced quality of stay, acceptance, and equality for all users. The timber construction convinces the jury through the aesthetic quality of its execution, featuring a material-appropriate, minimized, and meticulous joining of the wooden structural elements. The pier’s identity is carried forward and further developed through a local building tradition. Above all, its ecological sustainability through a resource-conserving construction method is highly convincing.
The use of recycled wooden dolphins (mooring piles) as well as the reuse of components from the old pier is also economically convincing, as the project came in slightly under budget. Overall, the Sieseby Schlei pier, through its aesthetic, functional, social, and sustainable qualities, is a valuable contribution to the building culture in Schleswig-Holstein. Furthermore, it is particularly commendable that this work was the only one submitted by a young office. This highlights the vital importance of supporting young, talented architecture and engineering firms…
