Replacement of the Schlei Pier in Sieseby
Sieseby is a village on the south bank of the Schlei and a district of the municipality of Thumby. The village has been designated as a historic area monument, a status unique in Schleswig-Holstein. The central point of the village is the Schlei pier. Serving as a place for scenic views and relaxation, as well as a starting point for water sports and Schlei boat trips, it draws tourists and locals alike. The superstructure of the pier and the jetty head were in poor condition and partially dilapidated. The reconstruction and revitalization of the pier were planned taking into account its diverse uses and its importance for tourism. Accordingly, the jetty was renewed with barrier-free accessibility, widened both at the entrance and the pier head, and fitted with seating areas. Provisions were integrated for various water sports, and indirect LED lighting under the handrails visually enhances the pier. Last but not least, climate adaptation measures to account for rising sea levels were also incorporated.

Construction of a Terrace as a Seating Area for Strandhalle 54
The first project carried out by Waterkant Ingenieure is located in tranquil Arnis, Germany’s smallest town. Strandhalle 54, a restaurant right on the banks of the Schlei, was to receive a terrace extending out beyond the shoreline wall. On the waterfront side, the terrace structure was placed on a beam supported by three piles. The decking, crossbeams, and pile foundations are made of recycled tropical wood.

Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club – Slipway for a Sublifter
In addition to modernizing the dilapidated slipway of the Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club e.V., the objective of this measure was to improve the situation for launching and dry-docking boats in the harbor. The solution lay in utilizing a Sublifter and designing the new slipway facility specifically for its operation. The Sublift 12 is a remote-controlled boat trailer capable of driving down an inclined plane into the water, loading a boat underwater, and transporting it ashore. Once on land, the trailer can move the boat to any desired location and place it onto a fixed cradle.

Maintenance Dredging in the Damp Marina
The marina in Damp is protected from sea swells by a northern and a southern stone breakwater (mole). On the inner sides of these breakwaters, sand continuously accumulates, steadily reducing the water depth in the harbor and obstructing the entrance. In recent years, Waterkant Ingenieure have managed and monitored the necessary maintenance dredging works.

Restoration of the Fischleger Dike
The Fischleger regional dike protects the lowlands stretching from Damp to Fischleger, as well as the lowlands of the Schwastrumer Au river, during Baltic Sea storm surges. The dike was severely damaged by the flood event in October 2023. Thanks to a state funding program for the reconstruction of coastal protection structures on the Baltic Sea, this dike was rebuilt in the summer of 2024. In the immediate aftermath of the storm surge, emergency stabilization measures were implemented. Subsequently, a comprehensive restoration was planned and executed. Waterkant Ingenieure supported the client both in applying for funding and in planning and managing the reconstruction of the dike in line with the current state of the art.

Modernization and Repair of Jetties A-D at Segelclub Eckernförde e.V.
With around 700 full, supporting, and youth members, Segelclub Eckernförde e.V. is one of the largest sailing clubs on the German Baltic Sea coast. Due to their age, four out of five jetties in the SCE harbor required renovation and were repaired in winter 2023 / spring 2024. Jetties B and C were completely dismantled, including their entire foundations, and rebuilt as concrete floating pontoons to account for rising sea levels in the Baltic Sea. The foundations of jetties A and D were still intact and were preserved, while the superstructure of the jetties was rebuilt using fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP/GFK) material.

Asset Assessment of the Jetty Facility at Segler-Vereinigung Altona-Oevelgönne e.V.
The jetty facility of the Seglervereinigung Altona-Oevelgönne e.V. is located on the north side of the Eckernförde Bucht (Bay) and primarily serves as a landing stage for boats from the nearby mooring field. If required, vessels can also moor at the jetty for longer periods. Waterkant Ingenieure carried out an asset assessment of the facility for the SVAOe. Due to the poor condition of the decking but intact foundations, they recommended replacing the jetty’s superstructure.

Repair of Damaged Areas in the Traffic Surfaces at the South Quay
The South Quay (Südkaje) is a roughly 200-meter-long waterfront retaining wall in the harbor basin of Heiligenhafen. Part of it is used as a berth for loading agricultural goods. A diver inspection of the waterfront structure revealed that the sheet pile wall was corroded and required remediation. During construction, it became apparent that washouts had already occurred on the landward side. For the rehabilitation of the quay wall, a continuous, front-placed, and anchored sheet pile wall was constructed.

Jetty for People with Reduced Mobility
In the harbor facility of Ostsee-Marine-Service in Kappeln, the existing southern jetty was converted to enable accessibility for people with reduced mobility. In doing so, a sports venue unique to the Schlei area was created for people with physical disabilities. To achieve the project’s objectives, an existing jetty had to be partially dismantled and then extended with a ramp structure including new floating pontoon elements. The specific challenge in this project lay in designing the structure so that it can automatically adjust to the fluctuating local water levels. At the same time, the moving components of the structure must not create any obstructions, and the slope of the ramp must not become too steep. This goal could only be achieved by creating a floating support that is longitudinally adjustable. A new pile guide/holder was developed specifically for this project.
The project was honored by the Chamber of Architects and Engineers of Schleswig-Holstein as part of the „Day of Architecture and Engineering 2023.

Jetty Renewal (Jetty F) at the Maasholm Marina
Maasholm is a municipality at the northern end of the Schlei, belonging to the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. The marina located here is close to where the Schlei meets the Baltic Sea and is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts. The harbor was heavily damaged by the storm surge in October 2023. Jetty F of the marina previously served not only as a berth for boats but also acted as a breakwater. It could no longer fulfill this function because, in addition to the storm surge damage, the pile foundations were heavily corroded and unusable for reconstruction. With a view to climate change and the expected rise in sea levels, as well as to ensure better wave protection, the decision was made to use floating pontoons and completely dismantle the old jetty.

Pier for Schlei Boat Trips in Schleimünde
The pilot island of Schleimünde is located at the mouth of the Schlei opening into the Baltic Sea. It is a peninsula separated from the main mainland by a nature reserve and is therefore only accessible by water. It features a harbor of refuge for pleasure crafts and the landing stage of the town of Kappeln, which is located in the outer area of the harbor and serves as a ferry pier for excursion boats. The landing stage was severely damaged by the storm surge from October 19 to 21, 2023. The wave action detached the superstructure from its foundation, and a large portion of the deck planks were ripped loose and washed away. As part of the restoration planning, the facility is being adapted to the needs of people with walking disabilities and designed to accommodate rising sea levels.

Restoration of the Promenade
In Brodersby’s Schönhagen district, the seaside promenade was destroyed by the storm surge in October 2023. In total, around 420 meters of the paved promenade suffered a total write-off due to the storm surge – 220 meters in the southern section and 200 meters in the northern section of the promenade course. These parts were quite simply washed away by the Baltic Sea, along with their entire subbase and the adjacent, vegetated sand dune and regional dike. An additional 500 meters of the promenade were impacted by the reconstruction and repair works on the dike and had to be renewed.
